What is cultural capital?
the correct culture, knowledge and knowhow that middleclass parents have to pass onto their children.
What is cultural deprivation?
a deficient culture with a lack of norms and vales needed to succeed in the education system.
What is material deprivation?
living in poverty with a lack of material resources needed to succeed in education.
What is labelling?
assuming knowledge/behaviour of someone and then acting as if that were true.
Murray?
links to cultural deprivation, underclass have no male role models, are morally deficient and welfare dependant meaning they lack the culture to succeed in education.
Sugarman?
links to cultural deprivation, immediate and deferred gratification. working class parents encourage immediate gratification which means their children should leave education as soon as possible so they no longer need to be disciplined. Shows they are being taught the wrong culture to succeed. The working class are also fatalistic.

cultural deprivation, working class have a culture of poverty. Where they centralise drinking, smoking getting into fights etc, instead of the importance of school.
Teather
As a solution to cultural deprivation, Children’s minister Teather introduced parenting classes to combat this culture of poverty. Parents were taught to have meal times together, strict bed times and more discipline.
Diane Reay?
Research based on interviews with mothers of 33 children at two London primary schools. Found out that it was the middle class mother who had the most cultural capital that meant they had the confidence to speak to teachers and hire private tutors.
