What would be taught to children at home?
How to behave correctly and a basic religious education
What would be taught at a Sunday school? From what age would have to children join?
Age 6. They learnt things like the Lords Prayer, the Ten Commandments, and the creed.
How were children from noble households educated?
By a private Tutor were they would be taught how to behave in a noble society and give them skills to be successful at Court.
What were Petty schools?
Small local schools that provided a basic education.
Who ran petty schools?
The local parish priest.
What did Petty schools teach?
Basic Reading and writing, and sometimes a little maths. Lessons usually had a strong religious focus.
How many new grammar schools were founded during Elizabeths reign?
Around 100
Who attended grammar schools?
Rarely any girls. Most boys were from upper or middle class backgrounds. Some schools offered free places to bright boys from poorer backgrounds.
Why could only few poor boys attend free grammar schools?
Their parents needed them to work at home.
What two Unis would boys go to after grammar school?
Oxford and Cambridge
How were university courses conducted?
Almost entirely in Latin before moving on to arithmetic, music, Greek, astronomy, geometry and philosophy.
What might some students specialise in after completing an undergraduate degree?
Law, theology or medicine
