Cross cutting / parallel
When the editor cuts between two separate scenes happening in to separate locations
Continuity
An editing style that aims to present the text to emphasise the real movement of the narrative
Cutaway
A brief shot in which the it cuts into an action scene
Dissolve
Used when one scene overlaps another and creates the illusion that they are some-what linked together
Cut
When one shot suddenly cuts to another
Eye line match
When the camera maintains the level of the eye and places the audience in the characters shoes
Fade
When the camera slowly fades away - possibly suggests time that has passed
Graphic Match
A cut from one scene to another that look similar - shows a clear link between scenes
Linear Narrative
A narrative with a beginning, middle and end
Long Take
A shot that remains on the screen for a period of time before it gets cut - slows down the pace of the scene
Montage
A series of shots edited down to show that time is passing by
Short Take
Remains on the screen for a short time before it is cut - speeds action up and creates tension
Reverse Shot
Cuts between two people having a conversation - helps audience see the reactions of the characters
Slow motion
Used in editing to slow down action for emotional or comical emotions
