Editing Flashcards
Shot Transitions
Wipes/dissolves/fades/pushes/abrupt cuts used to link shots or scenes in a particular way
Juxtaposition
Cutting from a shot of one subject to a different subject to create meaning for the audience (eg. the juxtaposition of a close up of a crying man, then cut to a gravestone, creates a sense of grief)
Jump Cut
Two shots of the same subject taken at different times cut together (think YouTube videos)
Smash Cut
An abrupt cut between two different scenes or subjects
Fast Cutting
Used to make a scene more exciting and dramatic. Can also be used to show the chaos and disorientation of a scene eg. a battle scene
Slow Cutting
Can be used to make a scene calmer or can be used to build up tension for the audience eg. having a long (time wise) shot of a character walking through a haunted house
Cross Cutting
When you cut to and from one scene to the other and back again, can be used to create tension or suggest theo things are connected eg. cutting from bomb ticking down to hero driving towards building containing bomb
Slow Motion
Used to emphasise the dramatic or emotional impact of an action or a scene
Match/Cut on Action
When an action is begun in one shot, and completed in another so the cut happend mid-action.
Graphic Match
A cut between two shots or scenes, where the layout and objects of the first shot looks the same and ‘matches’ the second shot.
Montage
A series of short shots, edited into a sequence to condense space, time and information. Usually used to suggest the passage of time, often set to music.
180 Degree Rule
An imaginary line that the camera must not cross to avoid objects or characters in a scene to ‘flip’ or ‘reverse’.
Cutaway
A cut to show a reaction of a character to an event happening elsewhere in the scene.
Shot Reverse Shot
Where one character is shown looking at another character and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character.
30 Degree Rule
A rule that means the camera must move over a 30 degree angle between shots to avoid accidentally creating a jump cut.
