Favors face, scalp and extensor surfaces

Occurs from 2 year old to 12 year old
Favors flexures
What are some associated features of atopic dermatitis?
Pityriais alba- white, rough, skin patch
Keratosis pilaris- rough and bumpy skin
Eczema herpeticum- eczema +HSV
Dennie Morgan lines- folds below lower eyelid
Keratoconus-thinning of the cornea
Allergic salute
Sign of Hertoghe- loss of lateral eye brow
How to diagnose atopic dermatitis?
Allergy testing: RAST,prick test
Food allergy testing
How to prevent atopic dermatitis?
Prevention through education: shirt lukewarm bath, bleach bath to reduce staph infections, avoidance of irritants
Breastfeeding
Prenatal and postnatal probiotic supplementation
What is the treatment for atopic dermatitis?
Topical steroids are mainstay
Sedative antihistamines ( hydroxyzine)
Teat secondary infections
Treatment ladder is topical treatments, light therapy and systemic meds
What are the stages of eczema?
Acute- weeping
Subacute- less weeping and wet
Chronic- thick, lichenified skin
What is eczema craquele or asteatotic dermatitis?
Xerotic skin with fine cracking
Mostly in elders especially in winter months
Due to decreased natural moisturing
What is the treatment for circumostomy eczema?
Irritant contact dermatitis secondary to fecal matter causing skin breakdown
Proper hygiene
Cut stoma appliance appropriately
What is statis dermatitis?
Incompetent valves of lower extremities causing venous hypertension, pitting edema and hemosiderin deposits
Often begins on medial ankle
Associated with lipodermatosclerosis (inverted wine bottle appearance)
Treat with compression stockings and elevation

Nickel- worldwide
Poison ivy- USA
What is the allergen in RHUS dermatitis?
Urushiol
