What is a macule? A patch ?
macule- Circumscribed change in color without elevation or depression less than 1 cm
Patch- Flat change in color greater than 1 cm
What is a papule? Plaque?
Papule- Elevated area of skin less than 1 cm
Plaque- Elevated area greater than 1 cm
What is a nodule?
Deep seated mass in the deep dermis or subcutaneous greater than 1 cm
What is a tumor?
Raised collection of cells greater than 1 cm
What is a wheal?
Elevation of the skin with fluid
What is a vesicle? Bulla?
Vesicle- thin walled elevated lesion containing fluid less than 1 cm. Can be superficial or deep into epidermis
Bulla- vesicle greater than 1 cm
What is a pustule?
Vesicle containing WBCs which gives a white or yellow fluid
What is scale?
Epidermal cells that are peeling off in groups
What is crust?
Dry/moist material on the skin surface that may include serum, blood, wbcs
What is a fissure?
Deep linear split in the skin extending through the epidermis into the dermis
What is erosion?
Depressed area that reflects a partial or full thickness loss of epidermis
What is ulcer?
Focal loss of epidermis and dermis
What is comedo?
Plug of sebaceous and keratinous material lodged in the opening of a hair follicle
What is lichenification?
Area of thickened epidermis induced by scratching, skin lines are accentuated so the surface looks like a washboard
What is petechiae?purpura?
Petechiae- Deposit of blood less than 0.5 cm
Purpura- Deposit of blood greater than 0.5 cm
What is maceration?
Softening and breaking down of the skin resulting from prolonged exposure to moisture
What is an annular?
Round elevated border with central clearing
