Define eczema
non-contagious inflammation of the skin characterised by redness and itching (particularly in the flexor surfaces)
Clinical features of eczema
- Rash : typically flexor surfaces, around eyes and neck
- Pruritus
- Associated with hayfever, asthmas, conjunctivitis
Differential diagnosis of eczema
Psoriasis
contact dermatitis
scabies
fungal infection
Management of eczema
- Emollients
- Topical steroids
- Dressings - physical barrier + more absorption
- Antibiotics/antihistamines
- Avoid triggers
- Topical immunomoulators - tacrolimus
- Phototherapy
Define psoriasis
chronic relapsing and remitting scaling skin disease
Clinical features of psoriasis
- Salmon-pink psoriatic patches (extensor surfaces)
- Well demarcated silvery white scale plaques
- Hyperkeratosis
- Nail keratosis
- Auspitz’s sign: bleeding on scale removal

Plaque, pustular, guttate, erythrodermic
Differential diagnosis for psoriasis
Eczema, lichen planus, pityriasis rosea, reiter’s syndrome
Management of psoriasis
Topical: creams/emollients, tar, steroid, vit d analogue
Phototherapy light treatment UVB
Oral: acitretin (retinoid),
Systemic: methothrexate, infliximab, adalimumab
