Ectothermy Flashcards
Ectotherm
any animal that does not generate sufficient metabolic heat to warm tissues above ambient temps
Poikilotherm
same meaning as ectotherm, but emphasizes the variable nature of Tb in these animals
Behavioral thermoregulation
Able to maintain nearly constant Tb due to exploiting microclimates
Melanophores
o Cells that contain significant amount of pigment within vesicles called melanosomes
o Animal color can quickly change based on distribution of pigment within cell
α-melanophore stimulating hormone (α-MSH)
o Epinephrine & melatonin cause pigment to aggregate in center of cell (light color)
o α-MSH causes pigment dispersal (dark color)
Temperature coefficient (Q10)
o Refers to the acute change in any rate process over a 10C span in Tb
o Q10= Rt/R(T-10)
Compensation (complete and partial)
chronic exposure to a novel Ta often results in increased performance relative to performance following acute exposure to new temperature
