Why is ECT used?

Fast way to relieve symptoms of severely depressed or suicidal patients, or patients who suffer mania/etc.

When is it used?

As a last resort when patients become unresponsive to other uses of therapy or are a threat to themselves and others.

How often is it used?

Answer 3

3 times a week, and usually up to 15 sessions.

After patient is back to a normal functioning level, there is an additional 1 or 2 sessions.

Painless due to bearing little resemblance to the first technique used.
