ecosystems and transfers of biomass Flashcards
what is a consumer
what is a niche
what is a produce
what is an autotroph
what is a heterotroph
what is a decomposer/ saprotroph
-any heterotrophic organism on a food chain or web; primary feed on plants and are eaten by secondary. these are eaten by tertiary
-role of an organism within its habitat
-organism such as plants that produce biomass by converting energy from the sun into chemical energy in biological molecules
-organisms that make organic molecules from inorganic molecules e.g co2 and water in photosynthesis
-unable to produce organic molecules from inorganic ones so consume other organisms
-living organisms that feed on waste or dead organic matter
why are ecosystems described as being dynamic
they are constantly changing
what are the 3 types of change that can affect population size and behaviour in an ecosystem
explain them
cyclic- changes that repeat themselves in a rhythm e,g tides, day/night, prey predator population- fox and rabbit
directional- go in one direction; tend to last longer than lifetime of organisms e.g coastal erosion, deforestation
-unpredictable/ erratic - Big natural events impacting an ecosystem e.g flooding, lightning or hurricanes
