Ecosystems Flashcards
What are the levels in food chains?
- Producers
- Primary consumers
- Secondary consumers
- Tertiary consumers
- Quaternary consumers
What are producers?
- Producers are the start of every food chain.
2. Are known as autotrophic because they make their own food (glucose) through photosynthesis.
What are consumers?
Consumers are heterotrophic organisms b/c they cannot produce their own food, and instead obtain food energy by consuming other organisms
.
What do food chains show?
- Show the route biomass can tak through an ecosystem. They always start with producers
- Each organism will represent a population.
What do food webs show?
- The feeding relationships within an ecosystem.
- Multiple food chains an how they interlink
- Competition for resources and interdependence
What is glucose used to make?
- Polymers like cellulose for growth and starch for storage.
- Glycerol and fatty acids - these combine to make lipids, which are used for storage and for making cell membranes.
- Amino acids - these join together to make structural and functional proteins.
How are carbohydrates broken down?
An enzyme called amylase breaks down carbohydrates into sugars like glucose.
How are lipids broken down?
An enzyme called lipase breaks down lipids into fatty acids and glycerol.
How are proteins broken down?
An enzyme called protease breaks down proteins into amino acids.
