Ecosystems Flashcards
What are biotic factors?
The living things that exist in the environment such as predators and parasites
What are abiotic factors?
The non-living things that exist in the environment such as soil and water
What is photosynthesis?
An anabolic process that is the ultimate source of cell energy, which captures solar energy
What does the captured solar energy in photosynthesis convert into?
Storage molecules such as starch and glucose
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy = C6H12O6 + 6O2
Carbon Dioxide and Water = Glucose and Oxygen
What is cellular respiration?
A set of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms
What is converted and released during cellular respiration?
Biochemical energy from nutrients is converted into adenosine triphosphate and waste products are released
What is the equation for cellular respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6CO2 + 6H2O + 36ATP
Glucose and Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide, Water and Energy
What does water do during the water cycle?
Does not change its chemical form, only changing state of matter
What is the energy source for water?
The sun
What is carbon recycled through?
Living and non-living parts of the ecosystem
What do producers do with carbon dioxide?
Take up carbon dioxide and build it into organic molecules for use
Where can nitrogen be present?
Organic or inorganic matter
What do decomposers do?
Break down dead plant and animal mater into ammonia
What is aerobic respiration?
The burning of glucose molecules in the presence of oxygen
