Body Systems Flashcards
What does the muscular system consist of?
Skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscles
What does the muscular system permit?
Movement of the body, maintenance of posture and blood circulation
How do muscles obtain their energy to contract?
Directly from adenosine triphosphate
What type of waste does the urinary system remove from your body?
Urea
What do the kidneys remove from your body?
Liquid waste from your blood in the form of urine
How is waste excreted from the body?
Via the renal vein, kidney, ureter, bladder and urethra
What is the pituitary gland?
The master gland that regulates other endocrine glands
What is the cerebellum?
The structure that coordinates fine muscle movement
What does the respiratory system supply the blood with?
Oxygen in order for the blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body
How does the respiratory system supply blood with oxygen?
Through inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide
What is the throat also known as?
Pharynx
What is the path food takes through the digestive system?
Mouth, throat, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, pancreas, liver, gall bladder, large intestine, rectum and anus
What is the endocrine system instrumental in?
Regulating mood, growth and development, tissue function and metabolism
What are the foundations of the endocrine system?
Hormones and Glands
What is the reproductive system?
A collection of organs that work together for the purpose of producing new life
Where is sperm produced?
In the testes
What is a womb?
Where a fertilised egg grows into a baby
What is the skeletal system?
All the bones and tissues, such as tendons, ligaments and cartilage
What does the skeletal system provide?
Support, protection, blood cell production, movement and mineral storage
What is the integumentary system made up of?
Skin, hair, nails, glands and nerves
What is the main function of the integumentary system?
To act as a barrier to protect the body from the outside world
What are the three layers of the skin?
Epidermis, dermis and hypodermis
What is the brain?
The hub of the nervous system is made up of 100 billion nerve cells
What is the nervous system?
A network of cells called neutrons which transmit information in the form of electrical signal
What does the circulatory system do?
Moves blood and nutrients through the entire body
What is blood made up of?
Plasma, white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets
What do white blood cells do?
Fight disease
What do red blood cells carry?
Oxygen, in the form of haemoglobin
What do platelets cause?
The blood to clot
What is blood the main mover of?
Oxygen, nutrients, heat and hormones needed for energy and growth to our tissues and organs
What is lymph?
A clear, watery fluid that removes bacteria and certain proteins from the tissues and transports fat from the small intestine
