Ecosystems Flashcards
Grass - grasshopper - lizard - eagle
In this food chain, how does the grass get energy?
The grass gets energy from the sun via the chemical reaction of photosynthesis.
What do the arrows in the food chain represent?
The arrows represent the flow of energy.
Carbon dioxide from air + water from soil = oxygen + glucose

High energy compound.

How much energy is there at each step of the food chain or each level of a food pyramid?
The energy that grass converts into chemicals energy is passed onto the grasshopper when they eat the grass. But not all the energy is passed on, the grass uses up some energy just living. The grasshopper uses up energy hopping around and doing other things, so the lizard only gets some of the energy the grasshopper got from the grass.
What this might mean is that there might be 100000 grass plants which can supply enough food for 1000 grasshoppers, which can supply enough food for 100 lizards which can supply enough food for an eagle.
Symbiosis
Any relationship in which two species live closely and interact.
