Ecosystems Flashcards
Producer
A small, living organism (usually a plant) that produces food, (sometimes water,) and energy for bigger organisms called consumers. (See next) An example of this is dry grass/wheat, because it produces food and energy for cows, sheep and goats.
Consumer
A living organism (usually an animal) that eats producers.(see previous) An example of this is a rabbit/bunny, because it eats small berries that give it food, water and energy.
Predator
A living organism a that feeds on smaller animals for food. An example of this is a wolf, because it feeds on small animals like rabbits/bunnies.
Prey
A small living organism that is considered food by bigger animals called predators. These animals hide from predators to survive. An example of this is a small mouse, because it is considered food by snakes, and it hides from them.
Species
A certain living organism that is classifiable from other organisms. An example of this is a Boxer, because it is a variable, or species, of a dog.
Population
The specific amount of living beings in an area at once.
Biodiversity
A variety of different types of plants and animals in one area.
Biosphere
The parts of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere where plant and animal life can exist.
Food Chain
A graph of an animal that eats an animal that eats another animal and so on.
Food web
Multiple interacting food chains
Habitat
The preferred area of an plant/animal to hunt, hide, and survive.
Ecosystem
The interaction between abiotic and biotic factors in one area.
Symbiosis
Two different species of animal/plant living together.
Mutualism
The relation between two living organisms where both benefit.
Commensalism
The relation between two living organisms where one benefits and the other is not harmed
