Ecosystems Flashcards
What is a biome?
A part of the biosphere which has its own climate, plants and animal species
What is the biosphere?
The living layer of the earth between the lithosphere and the atmosphere
Where can tropical rainforests be found?
In between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn
How do biomes differ?
Through climate, soil, plants, and animals
What is abiotic?
The non living sorroundings
What is biotic?
The living aspects which contain energy
Give some examples of abiotic factors (name 3)
-air
-water
-soil
-climate
Give some examples of biotic factors (name 3)
-animals
-vegetation
-decomposers
-dead plants
-dead animals
-detritivores
What is an invasive species?
an organism that causes ecological or economic harm in a new environment where it is not native
Name 2 invasive species
-Grey Squirrels in the UK
-Hippos in Columbia
How do the hippos in Columbia effect the environment negetively?
Their waste can affect the water in the lakes which provides habitat for animals such as manatees and capybaras
How do the grey squirrels effect the environment negetively?
They are more likely to eat less ripe green acorns, reducing the amount of food the red squirrels can eat as they eat ripened acorns
Why do trees in the rainforest have low branches?
So they can put all of their energy into upward growth to reach the light fastest
Who do Epiphytes grow on the sides of trees in rainforests?
So they can be above the canopy to get to more light
Why are leaves on the rainforest floor very dark?
Darker colors absorb more light so photosynthesis is more effective as there is very little light on the forest floor
