Ecosystems Flashcards
What is the definition of biome
An ecosystem on a global scale - large bands of land, running roughly parallel to the equator, that share the same types of plants and animals because they share the same general dimate.
What is the definition of ecosystem
A natural system made up of living things (animals, plants, bacteria and fungi) and their non-living environment (the atmosphere, the rocks, water, the climate) and all the interactions between them. This could be something as big as a forest, or as small as a garden pond or under a stone.
Where can you find tropical rainforests
Around the equator
What are the different layers of a rainforest
Emergents, canopy, under canopy, forest floor
How are tropical rainforests adapted to their surroundings
Drip tips - let’s rain drip off
Liliana - vines that reach the sunlight by looping around tree branches
Buttress roots - to stop trees from falling over
Epiphytes - plants that perch on high branches and feed off rain and rotting things
What are the major threats to the rainforest
Deforestation
What are the impacts of deforestation
Threatened species
People live there
Loosing medicine
What are two regeneration projects
Redd - pay countries that deforest to leave them alone
National parks - conservation
