Ecosystems Flashcards
Define producer
The green plant that makes its own food during photosynthesis, using light energy from the sun
Define Xylophages
They eat wood, termites and bark beetles are xylophages
Define Coprophagages
They eat animal faecies. dung beetles and flies are coprophagies
Define Geophages
They eat earth, such as clay or soil. Parrots and cockatoos are geophages
Define Palynivores
They eat pollen. Honeybees and some bitterflies are palynivores
Define Lepidophages
Lepidophages are fish that eat the scales (but not the body) of other fish. Some piranha and some catfish are lepidophages.
Define Mucophages
They eat mucus. Usualy these tiny organisms live in the gills of a fish
Define Bioaccumalation
Bioaccumalation is the build up of persistant or non biodegradable pollutants withon a n organism or trophic level because they cannot be broken down
Define decomposers
Feed on dead and decaying organisms, and on the undigested parts of plant and animal matter in faeces.
Define Scavangers
Feed on dead animals. For example, crows, vultures and hyenas are scavengers.
Define 2nd comsumers
Usually eat animal material - they are carnivores. For example cats, dogs and lions.
3 structures of leaves
Large surface area
Thin leaf skin
Curicle
Define xylem
They are narrow, hollow, dead tubes with lignin, responsible for the transport of water + minerals in plants
Define phloem
The tissue in the plants that transports the products of photosynthesis including sugars and amino acids
