Ecosystems Flashcards
Abiotic factor
Non-living part of an ecosystem
Biodiversity
variety of plant + animal life in the world/habitat. High level of it is important
Biotic factor
A living organism
Biome
large naturally occuring community of flora + fauna
Biosphere
the regions of the surface/atmosphere of planets occupied by living organisms
Ecosystem
biological community of interacting organisms and physical environment.
Population
all inhabitants of particular place
Community
group of people living in same place or having particular common characteristic
Habitat
The natural home/ environment of animals, plants and other organisms
Life support components of Earth
Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Lithosphere, Biosphere
Decomposer
organisms such as bacteria or fungi that feed on dead or decaying matter. Bacteria break down protein, Fungi break down cellulose
Photosynthesis (plants)
Water + CO2 + Sunlight (energy) -> Glucose + Oxygen (WCE -> GO)
Aerobic Respiration
Glucose + Oxygen -> Water + CO2 + Energy (sunlight)
1st law of Thermodynamics
Energy can’t be created or destroyed, only transferred from one form to another
Carbon cycle
how carbon cycles through earth systems (reservoirs)
