ecosystems Flashcards
Aerobic respiration
Breaking down glucose with oxygen to release energy.
Algae
Green unicellular or multicellular organisms that perform photosynthesis
Anaerobic respiration
Releasing energy from glucose without oxygen. It makes lactic acid in animals and carbon dioxide in plants and yeast.
Biotechnology
The use of biological processes or organisms to create useful products.
Chlorophyll
Green pigment found in plants and algae which absorb light energy.
Deficiency
A lack of minerals that causes poor growth.
Fermentation
Anaerobic respiration in yeast which can be used in industry
Fertiliser
Chemicals containing nutrients and minerals that plants need to grow
Haemoglobin
Molecule containing iron which carries oxygen in red blood cells
Iodine
Indicator which turns black when starch is present.
Magnesium
A mineral needed for plants o make chlorophyll
Nitrates (bio)
Minerals containing nitrates for plant growth.
Oxygen dept
Extra oxygen needed after anaerobic respiration to bring down lactic acid levels.
Phosphates
Mineral containing phosphorus for healthy roots.
photosynthesis
Chemical reaction which turns carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. It happens in the chloroplasts
