Q

Outline how the percentage efficiency of energy transfer between producers and herbivores
can be estimated.

A
  • collect samples of producer + herbivore from the same area
  • calculate dry mass
  • calculate energy content of both
  • comsumer/producer ernergy *100

16
Q

what are physiological , behavioural + anatomical adaptations ?

A
  • behavioural = way organism acts
  • physiological = processes inside body that aid survival
  • anatomical = structural features that help aid survival
17
Q

What is primary succession ?

A
  • colonisation of previously lifeless / uncolonized area
  • eg . no soil + ONLY bare rock
18
Q

outline the stages of primary succession ?

A
  • pioneer species eg. lichens posses adaptations ( can fix N2 gas , photosynthesis ) that help colonise hostile area
  • pioneer species alter abiotic conditions by forming soil
  • soil holds water allows other plants eg. shrubs to grow
  • pioneer species may be outcompeted by others
  • cycle repeats until climax community reached ( higher biodiversity + more stable )
19
Q

what is secondary succession ?

A
  • takes place on land that has been previously colonised but damaged in some way eg. wildfires
20
Q

what is deflected succession ?

A
  • succession is stopped due to human interference eg. use of pesticides ,herbicides ,fertilisers , grazing
21
Q

what is plagioclimax ?

A

result of deflected succession
