Ecosystem Structure and Energy Flow Flashcards
Ecosystem
Community of different species, chemicals and physical factors. Not living
What are the levels of life
Organism, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biosphere
Species interactions
Competition, predation, parasitism, mutualism, commensalism, resource partitioning
Interspecific competition
2 species compete, both harmed
Intraspecific competition
same species
Mutualism
Both benefit :) :)
Resource Partitioning
Divide resources to avoid competition
Symbiosis
Living together, Mutualism, commensalism, parasitism
Edge Effect
the edge of 2 ecosystems have more biodiversity than just one by itself
Fitness
An individual’s ability to survive and reproduce
Commensalism
One benefits other doesn’t care :) :/
Parasitism
One benefit one harmed :) :(
Predator Prey
One is predator, one is prey
Laws of Thermodynamics (1 and 2)
- Conservation of Energy
- Entropy
Conservation of Energy
Total amount of energy is constant
Entropy
As more energy is transformed, more is wasted
Aerobic respiration equation
C6H12O6+6O2= 6CO2+6H2O + energy
(oxygen-used-to-make-energy-from-carbs)
What does aerobic respiration do
Uses O2 to convert Glucose to Energy
Photosynthesis equation
6CO2+6H2O+ solar= C6H12O6+6O2
What does photosynthesis do
Converts sunlight, water and CO2 to create O2 and energy in the form of sugar
Producers (autotroph)
Make nutrients themselves
Biomass
Living organic material (wood, plants, garbage)
Chemosynthesis
Heat is used to convert inorganic compounds into nutrients (what bacteria that don’t get sun do instead of photosynthesis)
Consumer (heterotroph)
Eats other animals/plants, Can’t make their own energy
Biomagnification
When a pollutant moves up the food chain because consumers eat all of toxin in prey (fertilizer, chemicals)
What percent of energy goes into the next organism in a food web
10%
