What is The Oka Crisis (1990)?

A

Mayor of Oka announced a project to expand the golf course. Mohawks claimed ownership of land saying it was a burial ground. Peaceful protests were ignored and no compromise was met. Mohawks blocked access to several major roads. The police intervened and one officer was shot. More Mohawk communities got involved. Eventually, negotiations continued - federal government purchased land and left its management to the Mohawks.
