Economy And Enviroment Flashcards
What does sustainable mean?
Able to maintained at a certain rate or level
What are metallic minerals?
Metallic minerals occur in rare, naturally formed mineral deposits and are used in daily life. (zinc, lead, copper, ect)
what are industrial minerals?
Industrial minerals are geological materials which are mined for their commercial value, which are not fuel. (clay, limestone, ect)
What are fossil fuels?
Fossil fuels are fuels formed by natural processes, Fossil fuels contain high percentages of carbon. (coal)
Intensive vs Extensive?
Intensive is a system of cultivation using large amounts of labour and capital relative to land area.
extensive is a system of crop cultivation using small amounts of labour and capital in relation to area of land being farmed
Primary, secondary, and tertiary industry
Primary- The primary sector involves the extraction of raw materials from the Earth
Secondary- The secondary sector involves the transformation of raw materials into goods.
Tertiary- The tertiary sector involves the supplying of services to consumers and businesses
Clear-cutting Vs, Selective
clear-cutting is the destruction of a forest were almost all trees are destroyed.
selective cutting is were they only take the tree they need and leave most trees untouched.
What is aquaculture?
It is the the farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, crustaceans, molluscs and aquatic plants.
What is drainage basin?
drainage basin, also called Catchment Area, or (in North America) Watershed, area from which all precipitation flows to a single stream or set of streams.
What is Groundwater?
Groundwater is the water located beneath the earth’s surface in soil pore spaces and in the fractures of rock formations.
Conventional Vs. Alternative energy?
conventional technology to produce electrical power normally results in pollution that affects everyone.
Alternative is normally produced by harnessing the natural world around us and the elements
What is the greenhouse affect?
The greenhouse effect is a process by which thermal radiation from a planetary surface is absorbed by atmospheric greenhouse gases, and is re-radiated in all directions.
What is Ecological footprint?
The ecological footprint is a measure of human demand on the Earth’s ecosystems.
