Climate, Soil, And Vegitation Flashcards
Factors that effect climate (LOWER near water)
Latitude Ocean Currents Winds & Air Masses Elevation Nearness to Water Relief
What is orographic precipitation?
As the air rises and cools, orographic clouds form and serve as the source of the precipitation, most of which falls upwind of the mountain ridge. Some also falls a short distance downwind of the ridge and is sometimes called spillover.
What is cyclonic precipitation?
It results from lifting of air masses converging into low-pressure area of cyclone.
What is convectional participation?
Natural rising of warm lighter air in colder & denser surroundings causes convectional precipitation?
What is Windward?
Windward is the side of the mountain that the wind moves upward.
What is leeward?
The side of the mountain where the wind moves downward.
What is maritime climate?
the climate typical of the west coasts, and generally warm (but not hot) summers and cool (but not cold) winters, with a relatively narrow annual temperature range.
what is Continental?
Continental climate is a climate characterized by important annual variation in temperature due to the lack of significant bodies of water nearby.
What are chinhook winds?
interior West of North America, where the Canadian Prairies and Great Plains meet various mountain ranges, although the original usage is in reference to wet, warm coastal winds in the Pacific Northwest
What is the tundra?
tundra is type of biome where the tree growth is hindered by low temperatures and short growing seasons.
What is permafrost?
Permafrost is soil, rock or sediment that is frozen more than two consecutive years.
What is the Boreal forest?
The boreal forest zone consists of closed-crown coniferous forests. Makes up 60% of canada’s land area.
what is deciduous?
Deciduous trees are trees that drop their leaves for part of the year. They are found in temperate and tropical climates all over the world.
What is Coniferous?
coniferous trees keep their foliage year-round. There are over 600 living species of conifers, and while there is some debate over how many are native to Canada, the number is approximately 30.
What is treeline?
The tree line is the edge of the habitat at which trees are capable of growing. Beyond the tree line, trees cannot tolerate the environmental conditions.
