List Indications of a economiser fire?
Smoke & violent streak of flames & sparks from funnel
High economiser after exhaust temperature
High economiser steam pressure
Safety Valve Lifting
Paint discolouration
Why soot blowing neccesary?
To remove carbon deposits on the economiser tubes which can thermally insulate tubes leading to local overheating and failure/rupture of the tubes.
What to do when an economiser fire?
Sound fire alarm
Inform bridge & C/E
Stop or slow engine
Start extra feed water pump for circulation
Call emergency engineers
Start emergency generator & fire pump
Stop all ventilation and shut fire dampers
cover T/C with sheeting
Boundary cooling
If fitted used fire suppression system
Why keep exhaust temp above dew point?
Condensation of sulphuric acid in uptake wash down to damage economiser heating coil and down to acid corrosion of T/C and cylinder head
