African Americans- have higher divorce rates= more poverty (correlation between poverty and divorce)
Asian American- not collected until 2000- cultural differences
??
(patriarchal society and those who make the rules also have the most to gain- white males)
what are the childbearing and childrearing patterns of the poor?
Poor families are MORE LIKELY to have many children.
Poor parents are MORE LIKELY to exhibit harsh physical discipline and LESS LIKELY to engage their children in concerted cultivation activities.
What are the experiences of children living in single mother households?
Primary concern of policy makers and researchers is higher child poverty in these homes.
research shows outcomes of these children: higher likelihood of emotional problems, higher dropout rates, divorce.
(*most common among African American and least common among Asian American)
What is Personal Responsibility and work opportunity reconciliation act?
PRWORA - passed by Clinton 1996
replaced Aid to Families with dependent children of 1935 (AFDC)- by FDR
State block grant allowing autonomy in each state to decide how to achieve their goal of reducing poverty
Lifetime cap (5 year max) on receiving welfare (does vary by state)
Welfare recipients must work (adult) or attend school (unmarried teen parent)
What is the significance of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Recovery Act of 1996 on welfare mothers?
Immediate Outcomes: welfare rolls dropped, many people had jobs, and ultimately many people were lifted out of poverty
However (due to economic recession) welfare recipients are having trouble finding jobs and still getting benefits
