Joseph Stalin and the Holodomor

  1. Stalin creates 5-year plans in order to industrialize the USSR’s agricultural economy so that the economy would be able to compete with those of capitalist economies.
  2. The first 5-year plan was declared a success by Stalin, but actually failed to meet the large production quotas. 110% increase in coal production, 200% increase in iron production, and 335% in electric power.
  3. Holodomor 1932-1933: attempt to punish Ukrainian farmers resisting collectivization. The death toll of 3 million people.

Hoover’s Response to the Great Depression

  1. Causes of the Great Depression: Smoot-Hawley Tariff, bank failures due to localized private banking systems left to their own resources, collapse of the money supply due to the gold standard.
  2. Hoover had a hands off approach, relying on private charity rather than public welfare. Although private charities did raise a lot of money, it wasn’t enough to withstand the unemployment rates. Height was 25% unemployed of the total work force. 12,830,000 unemployed people in 1933.
  3. Social tension was high. Bonus March 1932, 43000 demonstrators outside of washington demanding early cash redemption of their service bonus due in 1945.
