Secondary industries employ people to make things, usually made from raw materials or which involve assembling several parts into a finished product. Examples are steel making, house construction, and car assembly

Tertiary industries provide a service for people, giving help to others. No goods are made. Teachers, nurses, shop assistants, and entertainers are examples.

From the 20th century to present, primary and secondary jobs have been mechanised, leading to a rise in the tertiary/service industry.

Quaternary industries provide a high-tech service that carries out research and provides information and advice. Examples are financial advisers, research scientists, and people working in micro-electronics.
