ecology lecture 3 Flashcards
biotic interactions limiting distribution
competition (-,-) and predation (+,-)
competition
2 or more organisms/species exploit same limited resources in same geographic area
intraspecific vs interspecific competition
competition within a species vs between 2 diff species
interference vs exploitative competition
direct physical interaction vs indirect interaction
competitive release
when one species is absent, the other expands its range of habitat
sign of competition along w sharp boundaries
predation
limits through direct consumption of prey and prey’s behavioral modifications
abiotic factors limiting distribution
physical and chemical: temperature, water availability, soil structure, periodic disturbances, ph/salinity, currents/oxygen
acclimation vs adaption to abiotic factors
behavioral short term vs evolution long term
temperature limitations
cells burst below 0 C and denature above 45 C
serpentine soil
high in nickel and magnesium, limits calcium in plants, goldfield flowers use magnesium instead of calcium and can grow in it
periodic disturbances
fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, and volcanoes
frequent disturbances=organisms may evolutionarily adapt
infrequent disturbances=may not be able to adapt
chaparral/fire
predictable long term, plant communities adapt to be dependent on fire to maintain balance
