Ecology Ch.5 Flashcards
Habitats and
tolerance
-climate and other factors determine where an organism lives
-ideal range of environmental conditions for species to survive
Niche (nee-shh)
An organisms role in an ecosystem (what it does and how it interacts with the biotic and abiotic factors)
Competitive exclusion
What happens if 2 species occupy the same niche
No 2 species can occupy the name niche at the same time.
-if they do, competition (fight for resources) will occur
Symbiosis -interaction between species
Predation- + (predators) -( prey)
Parasitism- +( parasite) -( host)
Mutulism- +for both
Commendalism- +for 1 neither for one
Keystone species
One that can have a dramatic impact on a community
Aposematic coloration
Are warning colors;
Skunks, snakes, wasps; “dark volors” contrast with “light colors”
What is mimicry?
The 2 types of mimicry
Mimicry-copying another organism
Mullerian Mimicry - several toxic organisms copy each other; wasps bees
Batesian mimicy- nontoxic copying toxic
What is a Succession?
What is a primary Succession?
- is when a major event wipes out a community
- went it wipes out a community and no soil remains
What is a secondary Succession?
Is when the community is damaged, but soil remains usuable( fire, flood, human activity etc)
What is a pioneer species?
2 examples
The first organism to colonize the area lichen and moss
Population density
Formula
And what does it depend on
individuals/ area
Depends on :
-availability of food/space
- weather conditions
-breeding patterns
Population distribution
What are the 3 types?
How the individual of a population are spread out in an area
Random
Clumped
Uniform
Population size (factors that affect the size)
-# births
-#deaths
-immigration
-emigration
Logistic growth
Real population shows this of growth (more s shaped curve) due to limited factors
Limiting factors
Density dependent
- strongly impact larger population
- competition
- predation
-parasitism/ disease
- food supply
Density Independent
- population size doesn’t matter
- rain fall
- weather events ( hurricanes,fire etc)
