Ecology Flashcards
Ecology-
ecology is the branch of biology that works with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings.
Biosphere-
the biosphere is the regions of the surface and atmosphere of the Earth or some other planet occupied by living organisms.
lithosphere-
the outer part of the Earth, consisting of the upper mantle and crust.
hydrosphere-
all the waters of the Earth’s surface, lakes, seas, etc.
atmosphere-
the gases surrounding the earth or other planets
ecosystem-
a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
ecosphere-
the ecosphere is the biosphere of the earth or another planet, especially when the interaction between the living and non-living components is emphasized.
disturbance-
the interruption of a settled and peaceful condition.
deforestation-
the action of clearing a wide area of trees.
soil erosion-
the washing away of soil by the flow of water.
carbon dioxide-
a colourless, odourless gas produced by burning carbon and organic and by respiration.
Biome-
a large naturally occurring community of plants and animals living in a major habitat.
climate-
the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or for long periods of time.
geography-
the study of the physical features of the earth and its atmosphere, and of human activity as it affects and gets affected by these, as well the distribution of populations and resources and political and economic activities.
average rainfall-
annual rainfall is a typical calendar year of precipitation as determined by certain departments.
latitude-
the angular distance of a place north or south of the equator.

micro-organisms -
a microscopic organism like a virus or bacteria.
aquatic-
relating to water.
terrestrial-
relating to earth.
ecologist-
an expert in or student of ecology
abiotic-
non-living chemical and physical parts of the environment that affect living organisms and the functioning of ecosystems
biotic-
any living component that affects another organism or shapes the ecosystem
