Ecology 9 Flashcards
What is an ecosystem?
Made up with many parts
What is a habitat?
Where an organism lives
What are species?
All organisms within an ecosystem that have the same structure and can reproduce with eachother
What is a population?
All organism within an ecosystem
What is a community
All organisms within an ecosystem that interact with eachother
List three types of symbiotic relationships and define each one.
Commensalism: one benefits, one unaffected
Mutualism: both get benefitted
Parasitism: one benefits, one harmed
What is a niche?
An organism’s specific role in an ecosystem
What is competition and what can it do?
Competition is fighting over limited resources. It can limit the size and health of that individual
What causes competition?
When resources is needed by two or more individuals
What is predation?
Relationship between eaters and the eaten
What is adaptation?
Change in organism to be better suited into its environment
What are the 3 types of adaptations and define them
Behavioral: responses to make organism survive
Physiological: body process to help organism survive
Structural: feature to make the organism to survive
What is a biotic and abiotic factor?
Biotic: living things in an ecosystem (animals, plants, micro organisms)
Abiotic: non living things in an ecosystem (water, air, light, soil)
What is biodiversity?
Life that can be found in one area
Why would a temperate rainforest have more biodiversity than a desert?
Rainforests have a wet climate, deserts are dry and water is essential for survival.
