Ecology Flashcards
(3rd Form)
What is the definition for a community?
Number of individuals of all the species in a particular place at a particular time.
What is the definition for an ecosystem?
Community of organisms and their interactions with the physical (abiotic) environment.
What is the definition for a habitat?
Where an organism lives
Why is it better to draw a pyramid of biomass rather than a pyramid of numbers?
A pyramid of biomass more accurately shows the transfer of energy as it accounts for the organisms being different sizes.
Describe how to measure the population of a plant species using a quadrant:
Place the quadrant and count the number of the plant species that are in the quadrant. Only count the overlapping plants for the top and left sides of the quadrant. Do this for at least 10 areas and take an average.
How could you make a random sample of which areas to use a quadrant for?
Make a 10x10 grid & then choose random co-ordinates
What happens to the grass which isn’t used for growth and reproduction by the cow?
- Not eaten
- Not digested
- Excreted
- Respired
The grass contains stored chemical energy. How might this energy be used (and lost) by the cow?
- Excretion
- Maintaining Body Temperatures
- Movement
- Chemical Reactions
What is the definition for a population?
The number of individuals in a given species in a given location at a given time.
What is the definition for a consumer?
An organism which consumes other organisms to gain energy.
What is the definition for a producer?
An organism which produces its own food through photosynthesis.
What is the definition for a quadrant?
A standard unit measure for calculating (plant) populations.
