Ecology Flashcards
Study of organisms and their interactions with their environment and other organisms
Ecology
Non-living parts
Abiotic
Living parts
Biotic
Individual within a species
Organism
All members of the same species in an area
Population
Several populations living and interacting in an area
Community
Community plus abiotic factors
Ecosystem
Many similar ecosystems within a large area
Biome
All biomes of the entire world
Biosphere
Have the most energy, and are at the bottom of the energy pyramid
Producer
Herbivores, are at the 2nd level of the energy pyramid
Primary Consumer
Carnivores, are at the 3rd level of the energy pyramid
Secondary Consumer
Has the least energy, biggest and at the TOP of the energy pyramid
Tertiary Consumer
Organizes the levels of energy in a triangular way
Energy Pyramid
Level of energy within the energy pyramid
Trophic level
All of the mass of living things in the world/area
Biomass
Not all energy that organisms get from their food will be passed onto the next level. How much energy will actually make it?
10% rule
The process of harnessing energy from the sun to make sugars
Photosynthesis
Process of breaking down sugars to gain energy
Cell Respiration
How a population of organisms is organized. (Clumped, random, uniform)
Population Distribution
Could have a lot of organisms in one spot or not a lot of organisms.
Population Density
Something that can change the number of organisms (organisms competing for food)
Density dependent factors
Something that’s out of our control (forest fires, droughts, floods)
Density independent factors
Change in number of individuals over time (Births and deaths)
Growth Rate
