Ecology Flashcards
Biotic
The living parts of a ecosystem including their remains and wastes
Bioaccumulation
The concentration of a substance, like a pesticide in the body of an organism
Biochemical cycle
The movement of matter through the biotic and abiotic environment
Carnivore
A animal that consumes consumers / eats only meats
Cellular respiration
The process in which sugar and oxygen are converted into carbon dioxide and water to provide energy for the cells
Consumer
An organism that obtains energy by consuming other organisms
Decomposers
Organisms that recycle nutrients from dead consumers and producers into the soil
Ecology
The study of living things and how they interact with their environment
Ecosystem
All living things in their chemical and physical environment
Food chain
A diagram that shows feeding relationships in the environment and the energy transferred through it
Food web
The representation of feeding relationships in the community and how they all interact with one an other
Herbivores
Animals that consume producers / eat only plants
Omnivores
Consumes producers and consumers / eats plants and animals
Photosynthesis
The process in which the Suns energy in converted into chemical energy
Population
A group of organisms, all the same species that interbreed and live in the same area
