Ecology Flashcards
Biomes?
HUGE parts of the Earth that have a specific climate and a dominate plant type
Environment?
All the living(biotic) and non living(abiotic) things
Habitat?
Where biotic things live
Can a seed sprout without sun?
Yes, it releases sprout
What is a dicot?
Two sides, splits easily, clear line of division longways down the middle
ex: bean seeds
What is a monocot?
Total seed, does not easily split and doesn’t have a line down the middle
ex: popcorn kernels
Parts of a Lima bean?
Seed coat, Seed Scar, Cotyledon, Embryo stem, leaf and root
What do flowers do?
Reproduction to seeds
What do leaves do?
Makes SUGAR(photosynthesis), have veins, stomates(holes,layers) that take in CO2, O2 and H2O
What does a stem do?
transports water up(xylem) and sugar down(phloem)
What is a capillary action?
Weak covalent bonds between H2O and everything
What do roots do?
Collects H20 and minerals, holds plant to ground and holds ground together
How does a plant make sugar?
Sunlight is absorbed into the plant by chlorophyll stored in ATP molecules and a chemical reaction occurs between water and CO2 from stored ATP molecules to make sugar
How does a plant make energy?
Breaks down/burning sugar using oxygen and releases energy, CO2 and H2O
What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis?
6H20+6CO2+light goes to C6H12+6O2
