Ecology Flashcards
Food web
Organisms eat more than 1 organism and involves lots of organismic
Trophic levels
The levels of a food chain (pyramid).
- The sun is the source of all energy in food chains. Green plants (usually the first level) absorb some of the sun’s light to make their own food by photosynthesis.
- Primary consumer: Consume green plants. E.g insects, cows
- Secondary consumer: Consume primary consumers. E.g lions, snakes
- Tertiary consumer: Consume secondary consumers
- Quaternary: Consume tertiary consumers.
- Predators: Don’t have natural enemies, they are the bosses of their ecosystem.
Food chain
The energy flow from one trophic level to the next
Ecosystem
A habitat or a place where non-living and living factors interact with each other
Symbiosis
Relationship in which two species live closely together, usually benefiting from each other
Parasitism
Parasite benefits, host is hurt
Commensalism
One species benefits, the other is neither hurt or helped
Mutualism
Both species benefit
Levels of organization in an ecosystem
Ecosystem population: a group of individuals of a given species that live in a specific geographic area at a given time
Ecosystem community: Includes all the populations in a specific area at a given time.
Ecosystem biome: A set of ecosystems sharing similar characteristics with their abiotic factors adapted to their environments
Ecosystem biosphere: the sum of all the ecosystems established on earth
Ecosystem micro
Ecosystem micro: a small scale ecosystem such as a pond, puddle, tree trunk, Under a rock etc
Ecosystem biome
Ecosystem biome: A very large ecosystem or collection of ecosystems with similar biotic and abiotic factors
