Ecology Flashcards
Environment
Is everything that surrounds and animal or plant eg soil, water, rocks
Habits
Is the place where a plant or animal lives
Interdependence
How organisms depend on each other for their survival
Eg buttercups need bees to spread their pollen and bees need the butter cups pollen
Ecosystem
All plants and animals interact with each other and their environment E.g tropical, dessert, rainforest, seashore
Plants eat their own food by eating other plants or eating other animals
Consumer
Herbivore
An animal that eats plants only
Eg rabbit,sheep,slugs
Carnivores
An animal that eats other animals
Eg fox , hawk , ladybird
Omnivores
An animal that eats both plants and black boards eg humans , badger ,thrush , blackbird
Decomposed
Organisms that feed on dead plants and animals eg earthworms , bacteria
Energy
The energy in any food chain comes from the sun
The amount becomes less and less as you go along the food chain
Food web
A food web is a two ot more interconnected food chains
Compatision
Occurs when two or more organisms seek a resource that is limited
Adaptation
Are features that give an organism a better chance of surviving in their habitat
Dandelion
Long roots to get water
Competes for space because they are able th spread their seeds in the wind
Hedgehogs
Excellent spence of smell to make them good at finding food
Spikes to fight off predators
Ecology
Is the study of plants, animals, and their environment and the relationship between them
Is the protection preservation and careful use of our natural resources
Conservation
Pollution
Is adding unwanted waste to the environment
The balance of nature can be damaged
If one orgasim is damaged it can be harmful to many other plants animals
Air pollution
Caused by smoke dust and harmful gases most of these come from cars factories and power stations
Acid rain
When fossil fuels are buried they produce gases called carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide
These dissolve in rainwater to form carbonic acid and sulfuric acid
Soil pollution
Caused by pesticides, Artificial fertilisers and acid rain. Chemicals sink into the soil and can be absorbed by plants, get passed up the food chain and cause illness
Water pollution
Rivers lakes and sea s are polluted by fertilisers, sewage, oil and detergents, they cause too much plant growth ,bacteria population s boom as they feed on dead plants and no oxygen left for fish
Incineration
Burning waste , this can relates more Dangerous gases into the atmosphere, difficulties with locations nobody wants to live near an incinerator
Landfill
Burying the waste in the ground damages soil, rivers and ground water attracts rodents disease causing bad smell difficulties as nobody wants to live near a landfill site
We need to
Reduce reuse recycle
