ECOLOGY Flashcards
The study of the interactions between organisms and their environment
ECOLOGY
State the six levels of organization
- ORGANISM
- POPULATION
- COMMUNITY
- ECOSYSTEM
- BIOMES
- BIOSPHERE
An individual living entity that can respond to stimuli, grow, reproduce, and maintain homeostasis
ORGANISM
A group of individuals of the same species living in a specific area at the same time
POPULATION
A community of living organisms (biotic factors) interacting with their physical environment (abiotic factors) such as air, water, and minerals.
ECOSYSTEM
All the different populations that live together in an area
COMMUNITY
Is an area of land dominated by trees and animals that live in coordination with the abiotic factors of the environment
FOREST
A large geographical area with distinct climates and specific types of plants and animals
BIOME
the vegetation is dominated by grasses and herbs
GRASSLAND
is a type of biome where the tree growth is hindered by low temperatures and short growing seasons
TUNDRA
I a barren area of landscape where little precipitation occurs and, consequently, living conditions are hostile for plant and animal life
DESERT
The number of individuals of a species per unit area or volume
POPULATION DENSITY
The global sum of all ecosystems, including all living beings and their relationships, as well as their interactions with elements of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere
BIOSPHERE
How the number of individuals in a population increases or decreases over time, influenced by factors by birth rates, death rates, immigration, and emigration
POPULATION GROWTH
The arrival of new individuals from other areas can increase population size
IMMIGRATION
