Ecology Flashcards
Environment
Is everything that surrounds an animal or plant
Ecology
It the study of plants animals and their environment and the relationship between them
Habitat
Is the place where a plant or animal lives
What organisms live In the woods
Hedgehogs snails foxes primroses oak and birch
Interdependence
Organisms depend on each other for their survival butter cups need Bees
Ecosystem
All the plants and animals in a area interacting with each other and their environment eg desert tropical rainforest grasslands seashore
Producer
Plants that make there own food grass dandelion nettles
Consumer
Animals that grit there food by eating plants or other animals
Herbivore
An animal that eats plants only eg rabbit sheep slug
Carnivore
An animal that eats other animals only eg fox, hawk, ladybird
Omnivore
An animal that eats both plants and animals eg badger thrush blackbirds humans
Decomposer
Organisms that feed on dead plants and animals eg eartha worms bacteria fungi
Food chain
Shows how one organism eats another and so on
Feeding levels
The first organism is the first feeding level
The second organism is the second feeding level and so on
A food web
A food web is two or more inter connected food chains
Competition
Occurs when two or more organisms seek a resource that is limited
Plants compete for light water minerals and space
Animals compete for food and mates
The dandelion
The has a long root which can get water
And it’s seeds are carried by the wind
Hedgehog
They have a great sense of smell to make them good at finding food hedgehogs have spikes to fight of predators
Hedgehogs have a camo colour
Conservation
Conservation is the protection preservation and careful use of our natural resources
Pollution
Pollution is adding unwanted waste to the environment causing damage to it
Air pollution
Caused by smoke dust and harmful gases most factories and power stations
Acid rain
When fossil fuels are burned they produce gases called carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide these dissolve in rain water to form carbonic acid and sulfuric acid
Damage acid rain can do
This acid rain damages plants and buildings
Soil pollution
Caused by pesticides artificial fertilisers and acid rain
Water pollution
Fertilisers sewage oil and detergents fertilisers seep into rivers and cause too much plant growth bacteria populations boom as they feed on dead plants and no oxygen is left for fish
House hold waste
Rubbish
Medical waste
Disease
Industrial waste
Toxic chemicals
Nuclear waste
Radioactive
Incineration
Burning waste this can release dangerous gases into the atmosphere difficulties with location nobody wants to live near an incinerator
Landfill
Burying the was in the ground damages soil rivers and ground water attracts rodents disease causing bad smell difficulties as nobody wants to live near landfill sites
Recycling
Paper glass some metals and plastics can be processed and reused this reduces damage to the environment
Reduce
Use your own bag do not pick the ones with extra packaging (use less extra packaging
Pollutant
The dirty things put into the environment are the pollutants
