ecology Flashcards
the amount of _____ gets less each stage of the food chain.
energy / biomass
biomass is lost as
waste
biomass is used in
respiration to make energy
energy is used for
movement
energy is used to control
body temperature
only a small amount of energy is used for
growth
energy is lost as
heat and faeces & urine
energy is gained from
food
how much energy is transferred between animals
10%
examples of producers
grass & wheat
examples of primary consumers
snails & lady birds
examples of secondary consumers
robins & blackbirds
examples of tertiary consumers
eagle & hawk
abiotic factors
non-living factors like
moisture level & temperature
biotic factors
living factors like
competition & predators
the ecosystem is
the abiotic and biotic factors interacting with one and other
what do the arrows in a food chain represent
the transfer or energy flow through organisms
what happens to biomass in dead animals
decomposers break down the nutrients & recycle them
how can we use quadrats to measure the population of a plant species?
you can make a 10 by 10 metre grid, use Ran# on the calculator to generate a random coordinate, place the quadrat at that point, count the plant species on the point then repeat 10 times and work out the mean, then work out how many quadrats fit into the whole area and times it by the mean.
what happens to the biomass that isnβt used for growth and reproduction?
it is lost as heat energy from movement&respiration or faeces&urine. or it is non-digestible.
grass stores chemical energy - how does this help a cow eating it?
glucose - for respiration
protein - growth&repair
fats - for insulation
