Ecology Flashcards
Allopatric speciation?
geographic isolation leads to speciation
Sympatric speciation?
No physical barriers but new species with diff food source/chara develop spontaneously
Mutation?
Mistake in DNA replication causing gene variation
Recombination?
Sexually producing population, new gene combination produced by meiosis/fertilisation
Members of same species show variation? (T/F)
True
Evolution?
Change which gives rise to new species. Organism better suited to environment.
Darwinism vs Neo-Darwinism?
Darwinism focuses on phenotypic variations (Traits) & natural selection as driving force for evolution while Neo-Darwinism includes genetic variations, mutations & genetic drift along with natural selection as driving force.
Genetic drift?
Random change in gene frequencies due to chance events - migration, isolation or population size fluctuations.
Which mass extinction currently in progress?
6th mass extinction (Anthropogenic Extinction)
Order of mass extinctions
Ordovician - Silurian, Devonian, Permian - Triassic, Triassic - Jurassic, Cretaceous - Tertiary, Anthropocene/Holocene
Largest mass extinction?
Permian - Triassic (250 mn yrs ago)
Cretaceous - Tertiary ?
Wiped out dinosaurs & 50% plants & animals.
