Ecology Flashcards
Species
A group of individuals of the same types who can interbreed.
Population
Members of the same species living in the same place.
Community
Members of the same species living in the same place.
Ecosystem
The community and its abiotic factors.
Food chains
A representation of the feeding relationships between different organisms.
Food webs
Made up of multiple food chains put together.
Producers/Autotrophs
Organism that makes its own food using photosynthesis. Food chains begin with it.
Consumers/Heterotrophs
They must consume other organisms for food.
Decomposers/heterotrophs
They recycle nutrients back into the circle and feed on dead organic matter (not usually included in food chains).
Trophic level 1
Producers
Trophic level 2
Organisms that eat producers = primary consumers
Trophic level 3
Organisms that eat primary consumers = secondary consumers
Trophic level 4
Organisms that eat secondary consumers = tertiary consumers
What does photosynthesis involve?
- Sunlight
- Carbon dioxide
- Water
- Chlorophyll
What is cellular respiration?
Cells in plants and animals use oxygen for breaking down sugar to release the stored energy. This gives cells the energy needed to function.
