Ecology Flashcards
what is the study of ecology?
the study of relationships between living organisms, including humans, and their physical environment
it looks to understand the vital connections between plants and animals and the world around them
what does the word community mean?
a group of two or more different species occupying the same geographical area
where might you find examples of communities?
the desert, the rainforest, the coral reefs, the woodland

if a group of organisms is removed completely from a stable community the community becomes unbalanced and many organisms can die from the loss of one seemingly unlinked organism, organisms are interdependent

stable communities are often very large and take a very long time to evolve

if a change occurs for example a tree dies in a stable community then the effect wouldn’t be as large however in an unstable community if a large amount of trees dies then the rest of the ecosystem is impacted negatively
how do plant organisms rely on each other
flowers rely on insects for pollination, rely on animals for seed dispersal.
how do animal organisms rely on each other
animals relay on insects and fruit for food,
trees provide camouflage and shelter, other plants photosynthesis giving lots of oxygen, the bacteria in the soil decomposes faeces
