Ecological Succession Flashcards
Number 2
Pioneer species, such as grasses and shrubs, start to grow
✨
Number 1
An open field has been created as a result of a forest being cut down.
Number 3
Pine trees, eastern red cedars, and black cherry trees (pioneer trees) take over the area.
Number 4
The seeds of shade tolerant trees get into the forest by animals.
Number 5
Seeds of shade tolerant trees germinate and grow slowly start to grow in the shade of the pioneer trees.
Number 6
The pioneer trees slowly die out after about 50 years and are slowly replaced by Oak, Hickory, and Maple trees in the VA forest.
Number 7
Oak and Hickory trees are now the dominant plants in the forest.
Number 8
Old trees gradually replaced with young trees of the same species in the climax forest.
Climax community
A stable, almost permeant community.
Natural process of change
One community alters the physical factors of an area in a way that makes it impossible for the community to regenerate itself.
Ecological succession
A series of changes in an environment
Primary seccession
Occurs in a place that hasn’t supported a community before.
Pioneer species
The species that appear in a primary secession community (population).
Secondary seccession
Occurs where an area has supported a community before.
Destroyed because of natural disasters.
