Cell Histrory Flashcards
Self-replicating life forms
All self-replicating life forms are composed of cells
+bacteria, proists, fungi, animal, and plants
-viruses
Cells
The fundamental unit of life
Smallest structure of a multicellular organism capable of preforming live activities
Robert Hooke
Used a compound microscope to look at prepared slides of cork and discovered cells in 1665.
Anthony van Leeuwnhoek
Grounded his own lenses (which were better than compound microscopes at the time) and observed protists, sperm, and worm cells in the 1670s
Botanist Robert Brown
Identified and named nucleus in all plant cells in 1833
Schleien & Schwann
Found animal cells and suggested that cells were the basic building blocks of life in 1839
Virchow
Observed cells dividing in 1858 which lead to the cell theory
Cell theory
- all organisms are composed of one or more cells (unit of structure)
- cells are the basic units of function in all organisms
- all cells come from other cells
Modern additions
- Energy flow (metabolism) occurs with cells. Most live activities occur at cell level. These include protein synthesis, getting energy from food, replication, ect. Occurs inside the cell
- cells contai DNA that is passed on during cell division
- cells are basically the same in chemical composition in organisms of similar species
Observed cells dividing in 1858 which lead to the cell theory
Virchow
Found animal cells and suggested that cells were the basic building blocks of life in 1839
Schleiden & Schwann
Identified and named nucleus in all plant cells in 1833
