EcoHealth Approach Flashcards
EcoHealth Approach (including which groups of people should be involved)
The Ecosystem Approaches to Human Health (EcoHealth) program emphasizes: The improvement of human health through ecosystem management Community-based participatory research (CBPR). The EcoHealth approach focuses on the relationship between all components of an ecosystem to:
Define and assess priority problems that affect the health of people and the sustainability of their ecosystem. Within this framework, one may infer the health of a community population based upon the state of health of its environment
Definition of bioaccumulation
The gradual accumulation of substances, such as pesticides, or other chemicals in an organism. Bioaccumulation occurs when an organism absorbs a substance at a rate faster than that at which the substance is lost by catabolism and excretion.
Definition of biomagnification
The concentration of toxins in an organism as a result of its ingesting other plants or animals in which the toxins are more widely disbursed.
Food chains (be able to draw these)
- Phytoplankton >zooprotozoa >invertibrates>small fish> large fish> predators>humans
- Crops and vegetables > animals > humans
One Health (including which groups of people should be involved and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s definition—
CDC uses a One Health approach by working with physicians, veterinarians, ecologists, and many others to monitor and control public health threats and to learn about how diseases spread among people, animals, and the environment.
“One Health is defined as a collaborative, multisectoral, and transdisciplinary approach — working at the local, regional, national, and global levels — with the goal of achieving optimal health outcomes recognizing the interconnection between people, animals, plants, and their shared environment.”
