Eclipses Flashcards
What type of eclipse would you see during a full moon
Lunar Eclipse
What type of eclipse would you see during a new moon
Solar Eclipse
Why do we see a full moon more than we see an eclipse
Full moons happen at least once a month due to the relative positions of the Sun, Moon, and Earth. Eclipses are considerably more rare and only happen with the orbits of the Moon, Earth, and Sun align in a specific way.
What type of eclipse is it when the order of the planets goes Sun Earth Moon
Lunar Eclipse
What is the definition of an eclipse
An obscuring of the light from a celestial body by the passage of an object between the celestial body and the observer or between the celestial body and its source of illumination.
What is the definition of a Lunar Eclipse
Full Moon passes into Earth’s Shadow(Umbra) causing the Moon to be red when the Sun, Earth, and Moon directly line up; last about 3.5hr
What is the definition of a Solar Eclipse
The moon passes between the Earth and Sin covering all parts of the sun; occurs when the Sun Earth and Moon directly line up. This lasts for less than 12 minutes
What does Annular Mean
Moon appears too small to fully cover the sun and there is a ring of light around it.
What does Hybrid Mean
It means that sometimes it will shift from Total to Annular.
What does Total Mean
The new moon is completely able to cover the sun
What is the Umbra
Darker shadow part casted by either the moon or earth.
What is the Penumbra
Lighter shadow part casted by either the moon or earth.
