Echinoderms Flashcards
What is the phylum name
phylum echinodermata
What kind of symmetry do echinoderms have
5 part radial symmetry
What is a water vascular system used for
feeding, respiration, internal transport, excretion, and movement
What is tube feet used for
movement and feeding
What are some examples of echinoderms
sea stars (starfish), brittle stars, sea urchins, sand dollars, sea cucumbers, sea lillies
what is spiny skin
calcium carbonate
How do echinoderms feed
carnivores by using tube feet to pry open shells and enzymes to digest prey, filter feeders by using tube feet to catch plankton
How do echinoderms breathe
tube feet as a respiratory surface, skin gills
How does internal transport work
by distribution of nutrients through digestive glands and fluid within the body cavity
How does excretion work
through mouth and anus or through tube feet if ammonia
What is response for echinoderms
they have a primitive nervous system, nerve ring around mouth with radial nerves in arms, clustered eyespots
How do echinoderms reproduce
external fertilization, most are either male or female but some are hermaphrodites, sperm is produced in testes while eggs in ovaries, in sea stars arms are filled with gametes, can repair through regeneration
What kind of symmetry do larvae have
bilateral symmetry
